Hotel Description
When world-renowned British conservationist David Bellamy says ‘The best example of conservation of biodiversity I have ever seen – Grootbos says it with flowers’ then one knows that he has discovered a truly exceptional nature destination. Situated less than two hours from Cape Town and overlooking the spectacular Walker Bay, Grootbos encapsulates not only brilliant service, warm hospitality, utter luxury, excellent cuisine and fine South African wines but also a unique environment of conservation and human development.
A place that the Eden Project in Cornwall has adopted as a major partner in its quest to develop its domes South African display and promote the link between people and plants internationally. Fundamental to this ethos is the amazing diversity of flowering plants on Grootbos. Protecting 2500 hectares of unique Cape Floral Kingdom, with over 750 species of indigenous flowering plants, a walk, horse ride or 4x4 drive through Grootbos Nature Reserve offers young and old an introduction to natures more subtle nuances.

Luxury Hotel Accommodation
Situated along South Africa’s Whale Coast, Grootbos is famous for its wonderful land-based whale watching opportunities. Whale watching in Grootbos is different to most spots along this coastline because the mothers and calves come within 30m of the shore, providing an unparalleled view of one of the ocean’s most majestic creatures. Gansbaai plays host to these playful animals from June to December when mothers and bulls venture closer to the shore to mate and to calve.
Guests can also take a trip on The Whale Whisperer, a custom built whale watching boat for unbeatable views and a fun whale watching adventure. From August to December Grootbos has an exclusive morning trip on the Whale Whisperer, for the best whale watching Gansbaai has to offer. And for the very adventurous, Grootbos even offers scenic flights to view the whales from a different perspective!
Besides the incredible whale watching by boat, land or sea Grootbos has many other activities to offer. Whether ones interests are birding, wild flowers, diving with great white sharks or relaxing on unspoilt beaches Grootbos has it all. The Cape fynbos is renowned as a flora biodiversity hotspot and for more than a decade Grootbos has
promoted its beauty, researched some of its many secrets and developed a suit of projects focused on conserving this exceptional natural region.
The gourmet cuisine is crafted from the finest and freshest local ingredients, including seafood specialties and excellent South African wines. One can experience a fusion of culinary delights while marveling at mesmerizing views of Walker Bay.
Accommodation is in spacious luxury suites, all with sweeping views across the dunes and ocean, private wooden decks, bathrooms, finest bedding and separate living rooms with cosy fireplaces.
From the beginning, the owners of Grootbos have been committed to the conservation of the regions biodiversity as well as the upliftment of local communities. The non-profit Grootbos Foundation was established during 2004 to run the Grootbos environmental and social development program and has as its mission:
The conservation of biodiversity of Grootbos and its surrounds and development of sustainable nature based livelihoods through ecotourism, research, management and education. Funds generated by the Grootbos ecotourism business, together with donations received from guests and other donors are invested through the Foundation into implementing key conservation and development projects. In this way all Grootbos guests are directly supporting biodiversity conservation and social upliftment in the Walker Bay region. The Foundation also aims to run most of its projects as self-sustaining entities that generate their own income through the sale of home grown products.
At Grootbos you will feel welcomed to a truly unique place where conservation, social responsibility, luxury and relaxation have found the perfect home.
