Hotel Description
In 1355, an inn was built in Oegstgeest. It was called ‘de Voskuyl' (fox pit), as foxes were caught using pits in the surrounding area. In 1517, the inn was destroyed and rebuilt. At this time, field preaching was held.
The road, on which the inn lay, linked historic Leiden with the fishing villages of Noordwijk and Katwijk on the North Sea coast. It was on this road, in 1926, that two enterprising young men bought an idyllic white house and 6000 m2 of land, with the idea of starting a teashop. One of them, Leo van der Putten, was a highly creative gardening expert, who had acquired his ideas in England. Upon returning to Holland, Van der Putten decided to try his luck at landscape gardening. His companion in this adventure, a carpenter called Brik, converted the small house into a teashop. It was renamed ‘De Beukenhof' (Beech Tree Court), after a 300-year-old beech tree. Van der Putten designed a garden promenade and, together with Brik, started selling plants and serving tea to noble families, who passed by on their way to the city or the sea. In 1948, the ‘De Beukenhof' restaurant became what it is today.
In 1953, Brik sold out to the Hotel Group Dikker & Thijs. In 1981, the restaurant was taken over by the Bilderberg Group. In 1994, Mr Kroes and Mr van der Klugt became the owners of ‘De Beukenhof'. On 1 June 1996, it was taken over by Erwin Rozendal. In January 2001, he gave the go-ahead for the building of luxurious hotel suites. The first five suites were opened up to guests on 3 September 2001, marking the dawn of a new age and once again adding an important chapter to the restaurant's rich history.
At present, ‘De Beukenhof' is one of the most well-known and respected restaurants in The Netherlands. While having a modern design, it retains a refined century-old ambiance and has an intimate, enclosed character both inside and outside in the garden. Many famous persons have preceded you in spending an evening here, enjoying its culinary delights: e.g. Queen Beatrix, Maria Callas, Liz Taylor, Montgomery, Prince Bernhard … and many others will follow you.
Since August 2003 De Beukenhof is a member of 'Small Luxury Hotels of the World'.
